about us

The YWCA of Charleston has been fostering self-sufficiency and independence since 1912. Originally designed as secure lodging for young women as they pursued careers, the YWCA has evolved into the city’s most diverse and comprehensive network of social service programs.

YWCA programs, facilities and services assist more than 10,000 individuals each year. Our shelters provide security for battered and homeless women and children. We offer permanent housing for disabled, abused senior women and transitional housing for those on their way to independent living. Our enriched childcare is available to all, regardless of income. Our three retail operations generate income for our programs and offer much-needed commodities to those with little or no means.

By helping so many people reach the goal of a self-sustaining life, the YWCA contributes greatly to a better quality of life in the Greater Kanawha Valley.
