Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for being so interested in volunteering at the YWCA Charleston. We are grateful for the countless hours, effort and energy our volunteers provide to our facilities each year.  

Maintenance and Facilities

  • Assisting facilities personnel with minor repairs.

    • This could involve fixing leaky faucets, painting walls, or repairing furniture. It's a great way to help keep the shelter in good condition and make it a more comfortable place for residents.

  • Volunteer to pick up food and donations and move residents (requires light lifting).

    • This is a vital service that helps to ensure that residents have the food and supplies they need. It also helps to move residents to and from appointments and other locations.

  • Cooking healthy meals for residents.

    • This is a great way to provide residents with nutritious meals that will help them to stay healthy. It's also a fun and rewarding experience.

Administrative

  • Clerical work (experience with Excel, data entry, forms, etc., is preferable).

    • This could involve data entry, filing, or other administrative tasks. It's a great way to help the shelter run smoothly and efficiently.

Special Events

  • Committee work with fundraising events such as the annual Guy’s Night Out and Foodie Feast.

    • This is a great way to get involved in the community and help raise funds for the shelter. It's also a lot of fun!  

Children's Programs

  • Various projects working with children.

    • This could involve tutoring, mentoring, or leading arts and crafts activities. It's a great way to make a difference in the lives of children and help them to reach their full potential.

Children's Programs

  • Volunteers to become involved with the Children's Mentoring Program.  

    • This is a great way to make a difference in the lives of children and help them reach their full potential. It's also a lot of fun!

  • Landscaping, weeding, and mulching in the spring through fall.

    • This is a great way to help keep the shelter grounds looking beautiful and inviting. It's also a great way to get some fresh air and exercise.

Special Events

  • Committee work with Girl’s Night Out fundraiser.

    • This is a great way to get involved in the community and help raise funds for the domestic violence shelter. It's also an amazing evening of dancing!

Arts and Crafts

  • Various projects with residents or children such as art and painting. 

    • This is a great way to help residents and children express themselves creatively. It's also a lot of fun and can be very rewarding.

Children's Programs

  • Tutoring with the after-school program.

    • This is a great way to help children with their schoolwork and build their confidence. It's also a lot of fun!

  • Reading aloud.

    • This is a great way to help children develop a love of reading. It's also a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

  • Sharing your interests with children from 6 weeks - to 12 years of age.

    • This could involve playing games, reading stories, or doing arts and crafts. It's a great way to make a difference in the lives of children and help them feel loved and supported.

Maintenance and Facilities

  • Mowing, and landscaping (weeding, mulching, etc.) spring through fall.

    • This is a great way to help keep the grounds looking beautiful and inviting. It's also a great way to get some fresh air and exercise.

Arts and Crafts

  • Group Craft Activity.

    • This is a great way to help residents express themselves creatively. It's also a lot of fun and can be very rewarding. This is a fulfilling way to support our elderly, as it can help them to stay active and engaged.

  • Landscaping (weeding, mulching, etc.) spring through fall.

    • This helps keep the housing grounds looking beautiful and inviting. It's also good for some fresh air and exercise. This activity brings our residents a lot of joy as they get to appreciate the fresh flowers and mulch from their front porch.

  • Getting Engaged!

    • This could involve helping with program-related needs to support racial equity and inclusion. It's a great way to learn more about these issues and make a positive impact.

Event Planning

  • Race to End Racism, Juneteenth, etc.

    • This could involve planning and organizing events such as workshops, conferences, or fundraisers. It's a great way to get involved in the community and make a difference.

Administrative

    • This could involve data entry, filing, or other administrative tasks. It's a great way to help the program run smoothly and efficiently.

Retail

  • Commitments to shifts of sorting, pricing, and/or clerking.

    • This is a great way to help support the shelter's thrift store and raise funds for the organization. It's a great way to interact with customers and the community while helping the store operate efficiently.

Development

  • Fundraising Rockstar:

    • Assist with fundraising efforts to support our programs and services.

  • Donor Relations:

    • Work with staff as they build relationships with donors and cultivate their support.

  • Grant Writer:

    • Have the skills to write compelling grant proposals to secure funding for our initiatives? We'd love to have you be a volunteer!

Event Planning

  • Fundraising:

    • Coordinate unforgettable events that raise awareness and funds for our mission.

  • Logistics:

    • Assist staff and volunteers with event planning and execution, decorating, and helping with guest list management.

Administration

  • Office All-Star:

    • Assist with general office tasks, such as data entry, filing, and answering phones.
