Job Purpose: to work closely with and assist the Racial Justice Program Director in racial justice programming (bias training, fundraisers, and community outreach).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support planning and execution of the YWCA Race to End Racism

  • Support the planning and execution of YWCA Racial Justice Programming such as Implicit Bias trainings and Conversation Cafe

  • Become well-versed on YWCA Racial Justice successes

  • Create educational and informational racial justice related content for social media

  • Data entry and research

  • Support event publicity, including placing marketing materials around town

  • Other duties as assigned

Shelter Assistant

Sojourner’s Shelter for Homeless Women and Families

Job Purpose: to ensure the health and safety of each individual and/or families seeking shelter and other supportive services by promoting growth, recovery, and self –sufficiency to those in need.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enforce all rules and regulations of the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter Program

  • Coordinate, cooperate and communicate with agencies in a positive, effective, and professional manner

  • Accepts crisis referrals and makes appropriate arrangements

  • Conducts intake and follow preventative procedures with all individuals entering the facility during the shift

  • Provides supportive services to residents as needed/deemed appropriate to support their goals towards self-sufficiency

  • Completes required documentation during scheduled shift

  • Assist all donors with the completion of a donation form

  • Assist with meal preparation including all aspects of the kitchen, monitoring temperature in freezer, dry storage areas, labeling food, and cleaning

  • Assign residents appreciation tasks, provide instruction/education if they are having difficulty completing their task and monitor to ensure task completion

  • Clean common areas of the building, emptying rooms, making beds, washing linens and ensure that the outside of the facility is presentable

  • Maintain assignment sheets and other resident records such as service reports and chore lists

  • As required conduct room inspections

  • High School Diploma or GED: and/or experience in working with others in a supervisory role

  • Good oral/written communication skills

  • Ability to work flexible schedules

  • Ability to effectively manage homeless individuals in a non-judgmental manner and with sensitivity to problems of homeless individuals

  • General knowledge and understanding of DHHR homeless person policy

  • Ability to handle crisis situations

  • Ability to enforce shelter rules and policies

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Specialist/Youth Services

YWCA Charleston - Resolve Family Abuse

Job Purpose: Provide needed services to children of parents who are clients of the Resolve Family Abuse Program. Assure that clients with open CPS cases have advocacy within CPS system. Ensure children are receiving appropriate referrals and intervention strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meets with children at the shelter and with family to determine range of needs.

  • Coordinates with DV Advocates on the needs of the child.

  • Designs program of intervention to assist children with their needs.

Domestic Violence Advocate

YWCA Charleston - Resolve Family Abuse

Job Purpose: To provide supportive services during non-traditional hours to victims of the transitional housing program.

Part-Time 24 hours per week Evenings Tuesday - Saturday

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Respond to needs of victims in a sensitive manner.

  • Coordinate, cooperate and communicate with agencies serving the sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking population.

  • Assist victims with goals towards safety and self-sufficiency.

  • Complete required documentation during scheduled shift.

  • Model appropriate behaviors that extend caring and empowerment to victims while sustaining victim confidentiality.

Lead Teacher

YWCA Charleston - Mel Wolf Child Development Center

Job Purpose: to direct all activities in a childcare classroom and develops programs and activities appropriate for the learning and social needs of each child, taking into account the particular strengths and weaknesses that each child may possess. EOE


Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and carry out a curriculum emphasizing age-appropriate activities to help children learn and develop

  • Develop a schedule and structure in the room that promotes positive interactions with children, guides and directs their behavior, and reduces or eliminates the need for reactive behavior intervention

  • Provide behavior intervention, as needed, without recourse to physical or emotional punishment

  • Provide guidance and supervision to assistant teachers, teacher aides, interns and volunteers to assure that they know when and how to seek appropriate direction or assistance for routine or non-routine/emergency situations

  • Develop positive relationships with parents and encourage them to be involved in their child’s care

  • Be able to explain all center policies to current and potential parents

  • Conduct two (2) parent conferences per year

  • Complete assessments on children as determined by the schedule

  • Monitor classroom configuration, staff practices and children’s behavior to assure that State child care licensing standards are met at all times, including standards related to health and safety

  • Train new staff to comply with policies and procedures of the individual classroom and general childcare practices

  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as assigned

  • Maintain an organized and clean environment including classroom cleaning,

  • Supervise administrative activities in the room, including, but not limited to:

    • Assisting parents with signing each child in and insuring that it is done correctly

    • Keeping information sheets current and in good order, and assuring that all staff know where information sheets are kept

    • Informing staff members of new policies and seeing that they are carried out

    • Maintaining first aid kits and updating them as needed

    • Dispensing medication as directed by the parents and/or the child’s physician, and

    • making sure that medication request forms are completed correctly

    • Maintaining appropriate records for each child

    • Ensuring that the room, toys, and equipment are kept clean and in good order

    • Inspecting equipment regularly for safety purposes and making requests for repairs to

    • equipment in a timely manner

    • Making sure that health and safety routines are carried out at all times

  • Provide required documentation to the Center within 30 days to employment to satisfy STARS

  • Other duties as assigned



  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Child Apprenticeship Certificate CDA or ACDS certification or college/vocational courses in early

  • development

  • Two years experience working in a child care setting

  • Knowledge and ability to meet the requirements of the State child care licensing standards

  • Visual acuity to permit routine assessment of children, observation of child and staff conduct,

  • and to allow development and use of materials, to create a “print rich” environment that

  • includes daily age-appropriate reading and literature activities

  • Auditory acuity sufficient to monitor classroom activity and to engage in meaningful

  • communication with children, parents and staff

  • Expressive communication skills to enable clear guidance to children and staff during routine

  • and emergent situations

  • Must meet health requirements established by state licensing standards

  • Must pass criminal background check
